It’s time for another Etsy Shop Spotlight and we’re thrilled to share another amazing shop owner with you!

This month, our spotlight shop owner is another one of our awesome design team members, Kelly Rowe from Live Laugh Rowe! Her Etsy page features a variety of vintage-inspired, handmade items –  including banners, gift-tags, jewelry and more. She even sells some her favorite vintage finds! You can see all of the items Kelly has for sale HERE.

Here’s more about Kelly and her Etsy shop owner experiences:

How long have you been selling on Etsy?

Let’s see, I opened the shop in September of 2011, so I’ve been selling on Etsy for about 2-1/2 years.  Wow!  Where does the time go?

What made you decide to sell on Etsy?

I often ask myself this same question.  HA!  I love creating things.  My sister and I used to make and sell things when we were roomies.  I think I just decided to try my hand at a little on-line shop.

How do you choose what to make and sell in your shop?

I find that to be a lot of trial and error.  I really like the vintage/eclectic/rustic feel, so I try to focus on that type of product; however, it’s really what I’m inspired by.   I’ll make something and list it to see how it goes.  I don’t keep inventory on anything until I’ve made a few sales of that particular item.

How long does the average item in your shop take to make?

I would say about 20-30 minutes.

Why do you think Etsy is such a great place to buy?

Gosh.  I love Etsy.  I love the creative space that you can get lost in. There are so many talented people out there, it’s crazy!  I also love that there are no pushy sales people {smile}.  Just me and my computer doing a whole lot of browsing (and shopping).

What is your most favorite item that you’ve ever sold or listed?

I think it would be the yarn wrapped star.  It was inspired by a West Elm ornament a couple years ago.  It’s a big seller every Christmas and can be made in any color.  If I was able to pick  another favorite it would be the boutonniere as well.  I’ve had the privilege of working with some wonderful brides.

Have you had any crazy requests for items?

Yes!  I had a wine company company contact me with an inquiry on making them a pennant banner.  They asked if I did screen printing too.  The turn around time was insane and seemed so random.

I’ve had people ask for some projects in colors/fabrics that give me incredible anxiety because it looks awful — but they loved it.   I can’t help but chuckle.

What advice would you offer to someone wants to get started on ETSY?

Do your research on what it is you’re wanting to sell.  Some items are so over saturated that it can be very hard to set yourself apart.  Regardless, be patient and think of ways to get your shop some extra exposure.

What is the most important lesson you have learned when selling on ETSY?

Price things fairly, but remember that you have to make a profit too.  I’ve learned a great deal in this department.  When something is flying off the shelves, your price points might be too low.  I’ve had a few items that I kept increasing by .50.  When the sales slowed down a bit, I knew I hit a fair price point.  I’m sure in the beginning I lost money.  Ha!  Handmade takes time and time is money, so you have to keep that in mind when pricing.

Do you sell at Craft Fairs/Bazaar’s too?  If yes, what would be the main difference between the customers you get there and the ones you get on ETSY?

Not really.  I did one for a private school a couple of years ago.  I feel like customers on Etsy are very intentional.  They are looking for something and have a vision of what they are wanting… the event I attended was nothing like that.  It was almost as though they were looking for something to inspire them and they weren’t the crafty type {hee-hee}.

I really like the birch wood ornaments…both sizes. I know that they are simple, but I’ve been looking for something just like that for a project that I am working on.
