I love the look plants, but am sadly not gifted with a very green thumb. Somehow, I’ve even managed to kill succulents, which people have told me are the most hearty of plants. So I guess it’s a good thing that terrariums are so popular right now. They give the illusion that you’ve got greenery at home. Plus, it’s easy to swap out the trinkets in a terrarium, so you can update them depending on the season (or upcoming holiday!) These are really easy to assemble, and make great accent decor!
To make your own, you’ll need:
- Glass Candle Holder
- Smooth Rocks
- Green Sheet Moss
- Spanish Moss
- Assorted Miniatures or Floral Accents
Note: the moss used is pretty dry and brittle, and may end up making a mess indoors. I ended up creating my terrarium outside because of this.
Steps:
First, fill your candle holder with pebbles.
I filled just the skinny part of my glass full of rocks. Then I put a layer of Spanish moss in. Spanish moss looks more like dried up grass than regular moss does. I put two kinds of moss in, because I wanted more depth and texture in my terrarium.
On top of the Spanish moss, I layered the sheet moss, filling the candle holder pretty much to the top.
Lastly, I placed my miniature dollhouse pieces on top of the moss. To secure any of the miniatures onto the moss, you can always glue it down.
Have fun with this part. You can change up the accessories to match the current season. So for summer, you could have flowers and gardening tools. For autumn, you could have a rake and some bright orange and red leaves. Winter could mean you frost the moss, and put a sled on top. The sky’s the limit!
I thought the base of the terrarium could use some sprucing up, so I set the whole thing on top of the extra moss and used the rocks as accent pieces.
