Gold Leaf Fence Planter Box DIY

Mother’s Day is almost here and I have a gold leaf  fence planter box that is the perfect thing to make and give to mom.  Or make one (or a dozen) for yourself!  I mean they can’t all be gifts right? The rustic picket fence look of this little planter box was just screaming for a modern touch. So I added some simple gold leaf just to the tips of the pickets.  Get the full instructions and see just how easy it is below.

Supplies needed to make your own gold leaf fence planter box:

Paint the picket fence planter box white on the inside and out first.  Mine took two coats and I allowed to dry completely between coats.  Once your fence planter box is completely dry, cover with painter’s tape as shown below.  Be sure to also cover the back of the pickets so the spray adhesive does not get everywhere.

Take your box OUTSIDE and spray those tips with the spray adhesive.  This stuff goes everywhere so it is important to do this step outdoors.

Remove the painter’s tape and you are left with a line of adhesive.  Do this step fairly quickly so your adhesive does not dry too much.

Carefully remove the gold leaf sheets from the package and apply around the top of the fence planter box.  Use the tissue paper sheets provided with the gold leafing to hold and press the leaf into place.

Repeat around the entire planter.  Then go back and take a paint brush to the gold leaf.  It will fall away as you brush it from any area that did not have adhesive.  Continue to brush away all excess.  TIP:  A piece of duct tape is excellent at cleaning up the leftover leafing that will be all over your work surface.  Just use the sticky side to pick up that excess gold leaf.

Once your brushing is complete, your fence planter box will look like a gold crowned rock star.  But we need to seal and protect that gold leaf.

This is a planter box after all so it needs to be rugged.  I used the outdoor formula of Mod Podge for protecting my gold leafing.

Just use a brush to apply.  Do not fret at this stage, the Mod Podge will dry clear and leave your fence planter box looking amazing.

See the finished product looks nice and shiny!  Once your Mod Podge is dry, you can add in your choice of pots and plants for gift giving.

Give this fence planter box already full of lively plants or give it with just pots and seeds so mom can plant her own.  Either way this gold leaf fence planter box is sure to be the star of any Mother’s Day celebration.  If you love it too much to give it, we won’t tell anyone!

  1. Such a pretty project for the patio Angie. I didn’t know you could use spray adhesive and Mod Podge to apply gold leaf! Thanks for sharing your tutorial.

This is so blasted adorable. Maybe if i can’t find the box ready made I’ll have hubs make one similar enuf to work. Not sure I’ll use gold leaf, might have to use gold paint and put outdoor ModPodge over it. This is so cute as a gift or any use, I’d love to have one with couple plants in it myself. Wonderful post, happy week
