Home Decor Craft: Valentine’s Centerpiece

This centepiece will give your table or buffet a romantic and festive look- and it can be made in about 2 hours!

Tower of Hearts Centerpiece

Supply List:

• Set of nesting paper mache boxes
• Red Acrylic paint
• Foam Brushes
• Red Glitter Spray Paint
• Acrylic Rhinestones
• Red Adirondack (alcohol-based) ink, optional
• “Romantic” words (We got ours from this paper stack)
• Victorian-edge scissors
• Mod Podge
• Hot Glue gun & sticks
• Tulle Ribbon

For our centerpiece, we used the biggest nesting box with the lid, then stacked the other boxes on top (save the lids of those for another project.)

Starting with the biggest box as a base, stack the first box on it’s side and secure with hot glue. (We put glue where the peices connected, and then held them in place for a few minutes while the glue cooled. To reinforce, we added extra glue around the outside. It’s OK if it shows- we’ll paint it later!) Continue in this way until you’ve got all your boxes stacked the way you want them.

Using your acrylic paint and foam brushes, paint your entire piece. We used red, so it only took one coat. But if you use a lighter color, like pink or white, you’ll probably need two.

After our paint was dry, we gave it a blast of glitter spray to add depth and sparkle! It doesn’t show up well in photos, but it really is cool in person.

Decoupage romantic words and phrases

To add our romantic words, we used phrases from a paper stack. The words that were printed on cardstock won’t decoupage well, since the paper is stiff, so we photocopied them and used that instead. (The bonus is that we can still use the originals in card-making & scrapbooking. A two-fer!) We cut out the words with our fancy scissors and decoupaged them randomly on the box stack with our old standby, Mod Podge.  We then coated the entire centerpiece in Mod Podge to seal & protect it- and it gives the whole thing a unified texture.

To add our “finishing touches”, Stacy dyed the clear rhinestones with Ranger Inks so they would match- but you can leave them clear, or tint them black for a more dramatic feel. Glue them on with hot glue randomly, and then wrap some tulle ribbon around the whole centerpiece. (Again, pick a color that matches your color scheme.) Tack the tulle in place with a litte hot glue to keep it from shifting around.

Voila! You are done, and this dramatic centerpiece will surely lend a romantic feel to your Valentine’s celebration!
