Start off by making this cool Fiesta Banner.

Traditional Tissue Paper Flowers

Then whip up some Tissue Paper Flowers.

Make a festive pot for a table decoration.

..and them place them in this cute pot!

So even though TODAY is the 5th of May, you can still make some lovely decorations to liven up your day. Have fun!

Supplies:

• K & Company “Cut and Paste” 2-sided cardstock (KC625532)
• Chipboard Letters (1208-72)
• White Tissue Paper (1192-26)
• Gold Glitter Glue (1057-78M)
• White Spray Gesso (SW7015)Red Glitter spray, optional (SW403)
  
• Gold Eyelets and setter (1027-95)
• Craft Glue (AR8-10)
• Glue Dots (GD12296)
• Ribbon for hanging
  

Tools:

• Scissors
• Fancy-Edge Scissors (1198-85)
• Paper Trimmer (1204-20)
• 1/8  inch hole punch (2700-59)

Start off by choosing the letters for “fiesta” and placing them in a box lid to catch the over spray. Using the spray gesso, coat the fronts of the chip board letters with 2-3 light coats of primer. Follow with 2-3 coats of glitter spray, if you like. (Alternatively, paint them with white paint.) After mine were dry, I used the gold glitter glue to outline the letters to make them pop.

Now let’s get our little flags ready. You’ll need 2 pieces of coordinating paper- I chose red and green for the traditional Mexican colors. You’ll need 3 of each, so cut the paper into 4X6 inch pieces using the paper trimmer. Using the fancy-edge scissors, trim off the 4″ end just a tad.

Now fold over that fancy edge about a 1/2 inch. (See? Isn’t this two-sided paper great?) Staying close to the bottom of the fancy edge, use the hole punch and punch 3 holes per flag. I just eyeball this, and I start with one in the middle and then space the other two out. What we’re doing is creating a sleeve for the hanging ribbon and adding a detail all at the same time.

Set your eyelets into the holes.

Next, make a tissue-paper fringe. Cut 2″ in tissue paper (I just cut it from a single sheet on the short end). Glue the tissue to the back of the flag using craft glue, about 1/4″ away from the edge. Just go back and forth until you’ve used the entire length of the tissue.

By the time I got done finished gluing the last flag, the glue had dried enough that I could start cutting the fringe of the first one I’d done. Just using my plain ol’ scissors, I cut little fringes into the tissue, about 1/8 inch apart:

Lay out your flags, alternating colors. Using your pop-up Glue Dots, attach your chipboard letters to the front of flags.  I also added a little “scallop” trim on the bottom of the flag, just above the fringe, using more glitter glue. (What can I say, I’m a fool for sparkle.)

Now, be patient, and let your glues dry. Once the are, string your ribbon through the top sleeves, and, if you like, add some tissue paper flowers to jazz it up. (See the Tissue-Paper Flower tutorial HERE.)  I just added a few rosettes to mine.

Now you are ready for your Cinco de Mayo party, or any other opportunity to party down. And here’s another hint for you: because this paper is two-sided, you can actually dismantle your banner and make another version using the back side. How about one that says “Party” or “Summer” or even “Mom”?  With just a few tweaks you’d have a second banner in no time!

Fun upcycled flowers!

I love recycling coffee filters into fun blooms that you (and even your kids) can make for Earth Day, Mother’s Day, or Cinco de Mayo.

Supplies:

• 4-6 round coffee filters
• food coloring (red a green for Cinco de Mayo, or your choice)
• cardboard egg carton
• 1 button per flower
• 1/2 12″ chenille stem per flower
• bamboo skewer
• floral tape
• green acrylic paint (optional)

Tools:

• craft blade
• hot glue gun & stick

To start, you’ll need 5 or 6 used coffee filters. After I brew a pot, I usually just take out the filter, grounds and all, and lay it on a plate to dry out. That way I get interesting color variations on the filter. When they are dry, I just brush the grounds off of the filters with a stiff paintbrush.

To make your color to dye the filters, put a few drops of food color into a spray bottle and fill 1/2 with water. My kids LOVE making the color spray as well as misting the coffee filters.

Mix a few drops of food color and water to make a color mist.

I use an old box lid to make an overspray box, and mist the coffee filters as desired. While the filters are drying, cut out the “cup” portion of the egg carton (one per flower) and if you like, paint it green.

After everything is dry, it’s time to assemble your flowers. Using the craft blade, cut a small hole in the bottom of the egg cup.

Take the chenille stem and run it up through the bottom of a button, around the top, and back down through another hole. Twist the end underneath the button to secure it in place. (It’s going to be the center of the flower.) It’ll look like this:

Next you’ll thread on the coffee filters- the stem wire is sharp enough that you won’t have to pre-cut a hole. (This is the other part that my daughter LOVES to do to “help” mommy!) When all of the flowers are threaded on, add the egg cup. As you pull the stem down, it’ll force the button into the egg cup and push the filters UP creating a ruffled flower.

To create a nice, sturdy stem insert the pointy end of the bamboo skewer into the hole in the bottom. Secure with a dot of hot glue.

To cover it all up and make it look nice, wrap the chenille stem and bamboo skewer with floral tape. Start at the top and work your way down, pulling and wrapping. The floral tape has a wax on it that will make it stick to itself.

Once you get to the bottom, just tear off the floral tape and smooth it down. Ta-Da! Your bloom is ready for a Mother’s Day bouquet or an Earth Day decoration!

We’d re-enact the battle of 1862, we’d enjoy a huge fiesta (party) with food, games, craft projects, and decorations, and we’d always create tissue paper flowers. Tissue paper flowers made great decorations. We put them in flower pots, use them as streamers, and wear them as accessories.

Cinco De Mayo Flower

Supplies:

3 – 6 mm x 12 inch Chenille stem (Item 10166-64)

Red, White and Green Tissue Paper (Item 1192-27) cut as follows:

3 – 5″ x 10″ strips of red tissue paper

3 – 5″ x 10″ strips of white tissue paper

3 – 5″ x 10″ strips of green tissue paper

2 – 1″ x 1″ strips of red tissue paper

2 – 1″ x 1″ strips of white tissue paper

2 – 1″ x 1″ strips of green tissue paper

1 – Aleen’s Tacky Glue (Item AR8-10)

Tools:

1 – Ruler

1 – Comfort Grip Scissors (Item 1149-17)

Instructions:

Cut tissue paper into nine (9) 5″ x 10″ strips and stack together, alternating between green, white, and red.

Cut tissue paper.

Using the 5″ side, fold tissue paper back and forth into 1″ folds.

Fold tissue paper.

Grab by chenille stem. Fold the stem around the center of the folds and tie by twisting the shorter end around the longer end.

Wrap stem around folds.

Fan out the paper folds to create the flower, then gently shape the flower. To fan, start by gently pulling layers apart, starting with the top layer.

Grab another stem and wrap it around the top of the stem, at the base of the flower, then twist it around the entire stem. Repeat with the third stem.

Sturdy stem.

Spread glue in the center of the flower.

Take a 1″ x 1″ square and wrap it around the end of a paint brush.

Prep tissue paper embellishment.

Place the square in the center in the center of the flower and release. Continue until you’ve used all 6 squares.

Add embellishments.

Voila! You’ve just create a fun, festive tissue paper flower.

In honor of Cinco de Mayo, I thought it would be fun to create a flower pot that can later be used for all kinds of goodies:

• lined with plastic wrap it becomes a planter for a live plant;
• filled with wrapped candies it becomes a candy dish;
• lined with fabric and filled with warm buns it becomes a centerpiece for your dinner table; and
• filled with paper shredding and paper flowers, then topped with green moss, it becomes a vase.

Cinco de Mayo Flower Pot

Supplies:
1 – Paper Mache Flower Pot (Item 2839-04) OR cache pot that needs a face-lift
1 – 6 mm x 12 inch Chenille stem (Item 10166-64)
1 – each, red, green, white tissue paper (Item 1192-27) OR leftover tissue from Christmas
4 – buttons (Item 1170-20) OR scavenged buttons
4 – paper flowers (Item PX165) OR old silk flowers you want to take apart
1- Mars black and Titanium white acrylic paint by Studio 71 (24 Piece Paint Set Item 97848)
1- Aleene’s Tacky Glue (Item AR8-10)
1 – E-6000 Industrial Strength Cement (Item EPE-6000-12C)
1- Krylon Bright White Gesso Spray (Item SW7015)
1 – Matte Mod Podge (Item PLCS11302)

Tools:
1 – Sponge Brush (Multi-purpose Value Pack Item SB9561)
1 – Thin tipped paint brush (Multi-purpose Value Pack Item SB9561)
1- Comfort Grip Scissors (Item 1149-17)
1- Ruler (Item 9137-48)

Instructions:

1. Paint flower pot with Gesso Spray.

2. Cut tissue paper into 2″x7″ strips and 1″x2″ strips.

3. Place flower pot on top of tissue paper, trace, and cut out circle.

4. Use Mod Podge to adhere strips to flower pot. Let dry.

5. Use Mod Podge to adhere circle to bottom of flower pot. Let dry.

6. Dip thin tipped paint brush into black paint and create a design on the flower pot. You can create a minimal design, such as the one shown, or you can create a more elaborate design using triangles, circles, squiggles, and Spanish text. Let dry.

7. Paint bottom of flower pot black. Let dry.

8. Paint inside of flower pot white. Let dry.

9. Seal inside and outside of flower pot with Mod Podge.
10. Put a small dab of E-6000 adhesive on the back of flowers and adhere to flower pot.

11. Put a small dab of E-6000 adhesive on the back of buttons and adhere to top of flowers.

Adhere buttons.
