Paper Crafts, Techniques

Below is a post that appeared on CoreDinations.com, a great blog that is chock-full of cardstock projects like scrapbook pages, cards, and more. We asked (nicely) if we could share this tutorial with you on how to make beautiful roses from paper. After all, flowers are so on-trend and Core’Dinations paper is the BEST!

Rolled roses, three ways: Classic, Elegant and Tattered

This is Charlotte Dobson, guest designer for Core’dinations cardstock. For this tutorial today, I am going to show you how to make three different styles of rolled roses. They all start with the same basic first two steps. Then the fun begins! I encourage you to try one style, or all three.

Basic Step 1: Using your favorite punch, die cut machine or scissors, cut a circle for each rose that you would like to make. You can experiment with different sizes here. The larger your circle, the larger and higher your finished rose will be. For this tutorial, I am using 3” circles.

Basic Step 2: Cut a spiral, starting at the outer edge and working towards the middle. You will need to have that small lip in the middle as it will later hold your rose together and the adhesive in place.

Note:  You will use these Basic steps for all three.

The Classic Rolled Rose
(Follow basic steps 1 and 2 for cutting a circle and spiral)

Step 3: For the classic rose, flip the cardstock over onto the back side. Begin rolling from the outer edge towards the middle. If you find your rose is wound too tightly, simply let go of it (it will still hold its shape) and adjust the tension to your liking.

Step 4: Lift the bottom lip and dollop on a strong liquid adhesive. Press the lip back down, turn right side up and let dry. The finished product! A classic rolled rose. Simple and timeless.

The Elegant Rolled Rose
(Follow basic steps 1 and 2 for cutting a circle and spiral.)

Step 3: Keeping your cardstock right side up this time, lightly bend the edges over following your cut spiral.

Step 4: Begin rolling the spiral, starting at the outer edge.

Step 5: Apply adhesive to the bottom of your rose.

Voila! An elegant rolled rose. So pretty!

The Tattered Rolled Rose

(Follow basic steps 1 and 2 for cutting the circle and spiral.)

Step 3: Using your favorite distressing tool, distress the outer edges of your spiral.

Step 4: Keeping your cardstock right side up, spray lightly with water or any of the many mist products on the market today. You want your cardstock to be damp, but not wet. It will start to curl and bend a little; that is ok.

Step 5: As with the other two styles of roses, begin rolling by starting at the outer edge.

Step 6: Being that the cardstock is damp, as you continue rolling you will notice that you’ll get to a point where it naturally wants to tear. This is what we want! Continue to make tiny tears along the edge of the spiral as you continue rolling. These will be the tattered petals of your rose.

Step 7: In order for the adhesive to adhere, let the rose dry before applying it. Dollop onto the bottom as with the other two roses.

All that hard work paid off. You have a beautiful tattered rose, perfect for all of your vintage and shabby-chic projects.

Here’s an example of how they could look on your finished projects:

I just adore these roses! I just learned 2 make them this week;) Thanx 4 this tutorial tho, b/c I wasn’t sure how 2 glue them, now I know that u use that lip from inner spiral 2 glue at the bottom. 1 question: Do glue the edges of the rose 2 the lip or do u glue the lip flush against the outer edge? I hope this makes sense~lol! Kinda hard 2 describe. Maybe I can find a Youtube video~2 show me how 2 glue it~haha! Thanx again!
