I have fallen in love with Cricut Vinyl, and just HAD to share it with you. If you’ve never used craft vinyl, you are in for a pleasant surprise! It can be used for all kinds of crafts, and can be cut in so many ways! Plus, it comes in various colors and is embossable, repositionible, and removable.

Basically it’s a large sheet of vinyl with a removable adhesive on the back, adhered to a peel-off plastic backing. Some of the ways you can cut vinyl are:

  • scissors
  • paper punches (just make sure they aren’t too intricate and are good and sharp)
  • manual die-cutting machines, like the Cuttlebug
  • electric die-cutting machines, like the Cricut (use “3″ for speed and “3″ for pressure)
Use the Cuttlebug to emboss your vinyl

You can also emboss the vinyl- I used the Cuttlebug, and as you can see, it’s gorgeous!

I really like the idea of using vinyl (which is sold in a package of two 12X24″ sheets) for home decor to decorate mirrors, vases, and windows. I even cut out some butterflies and soccer balls using a Cricut cartridge to put on my kid’s walls (as long as they’re painted, it’s removable.) That way as what my kids are “into” changes, I can update their rooms without too much fuss or expense.

I could probably write a doctoral dissertation on the uses of vinyl but I’ll cut to the chase and give you the bullet points. Use vinyl for:

  • Making stencils for fabric painting
  • Making stencils/masks for glass etching
  • Make removable decals for mirrors, glass, plastic or metal surfaces
  • Cut out custom stickers for cards, scrapbooks, etc

Use vinyl cut-outs to upcycle/recycle- cover up logo-printed items- cover up that garish logo with cute custom stickers!

If you’ve used vinyl in your crafts, please share your ideas with us!

  1. Madelyn Says:

Will the vinyl come off the glass when it is washed?

  2. Jenny Says:

Yes, if it’s washed in a dishwasher. I if you wash carefully by hand, it’ll last a bit longer. HTH, Jeny
