Mokume Gane is a fun and easy polymer clay technique.
Mokume Gane (pronounced moe-koo-may-GAHN-ay) translated from Japanese to mean “woodgrained metal.” When you transfer that term to polymer clay it is a technique of stacking, constructing and layering polymer clay to achieve a beautiful unique design. There are many different techniques to make Mokume Gane. My technique is a combination of several types.
If you follow the photo-tutorial below, you can make your own pretty polymer clay pendant. Choose the colors you like from the Polymer Clay sample pack. Make sure you have a variety of light and dark – three to five colors is ideal. More than 5 and it looses contrast and definition.
Supplies:
- Roll polymer clay as thin as possible
- Cut a small square
- Repeat previous steps with white clay
- Repeat on pink polymer clay
- Press layers together and cut in half
- Press layers together and cut in half
- Stack layers on top of each other
- Press polymer clay layers together
- Press tools in random places
- Press tools into clay
- Slice clay at random spots and place white in between
- Press clay back together
- Form cube with polymer clay
- Press hole in clay
- Fill hole with clay
- Repeat and form back into cube
- Slice off layer for pendant
- Mark clay with pendant
- Cut off excess
- Place Mokume Gane inside pendant
- Bake pendant in oven
