Part 2: Kid’s Craft Party – Jewelry Making

If you’re looking for a fun activity to do with kids, pull out the beads and buttons and set out to make some fun jewelry that even your young kids can create. This is a great activity to do with groups or at a craft party. Everyone can make their own bit of jewelry and not only wear their creation, but take it home as a party favor.

The goal is to allow each child to mix and match accessories to create a piece that is uniquely them. Make sure to have a variety of items so every child can have the opportunity to make a jewelry piece they love.

Tips to make jewelry with kids
There really isn’t an exact method to making jewelry with kids. Mix and match pieces as you’d like. However, here are a few tips to ensure your jewelry creations are a success.
  1. Cut ribbon or string long enough to slip over a child’s hand or head depending if you’re making a necklace or a bracelet. Then add an extra 6 inches to make sure you have enough left to tie in the end.
  2. Tie on the first button or bead so it stays in place and the rest of the beads and buttons don’t fall off the end.
  3. Make sure to measure the final piece before tying ends together. You don’t want it too small, but you also want to make sure it’s not too big.
  4. The assorted pony beads come in different sizes and sometimes small beads get stuck inside the hole of larger beads. Use the end of a paperclip to dislodge the small bead.

If you are making a jewelry project with really young kids (not recommended for under 3), try using chenille stems instead of ribbon. The stems are more stiff and easier to hold, so kids have a more successful time threading them through the beads.

Many kids will see the supplies and instinctively start putting them together. Watch what amazing creations they will come up with, without you guiding the entire process. Some kids like to make patterns while others like to see how extravagant they can make their bracelet. Have fun with this project and be prepared for a house full of jewelry making pros!
