How-to: Easy Wrapped Wire Bird Necklace

I must subconsciously be longing for spring! My last few DIY projects have all featured birds. Like today’s bird necklace and this framed bird decor.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-1I have seen similar bird necklaces selling for a higher price then I wanted to pay- so what does a good, thrify crafter do? Figure out how to make my own bird necklace! It was crazy simple, and best of all- inexpensive. After I made one bird necklace for myself, I made a few custom pieces for my sisters, and friends.

Supplies needed to make your own bird necklace:supply2

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-11Decide how many “eggs” you would like in your wire nest. I chose 5, because I have five children. I custom made nests for my sisters and friends with the proper amount of pearl “eggs.”

String your pearl beads on the craft wire.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-2Using round nosed pliers, create a small, tight loop in the end of the wire.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-3Then, bend your wire so the pearl “eggs” sit in a circle.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-4Take the wire up and over the top of the end pearl, then to the bottom-and start winding the wire in a circle on the bottom.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-5Keep winding to create the bottom of the nest. It is going to look haphazard and lopsided. Hey- it’s a nest. The charm of a nest is the imperfection, right?

Once you get somewhat of a bottom to the nest, flip it over, and start winding the wire up the sides of the pearl “eggs.”

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-6Once you are satisfied with the way the nest looks- leave a length of wire (about 8″) and trim the wire from the spool.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-7Now we will secure the nest, so it doesn’t unravel on your neck!

What you are going to do- is basically sew the nest with the excess wire.

Take the wire up and around the side of the nest, securing it through the “egg” circle,  and back down through the bottom.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-8Repeat 2-3 times in the same spot, and then repeat on the opposite side of the nest.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-9When you “sew” the opposite side of the nest, bring the wire up from the bottom to finish it. You want to finish the wire off on the top, so you don’t have a scratchy wire end pressing against your neck.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-10Make another small, tight loop with the round nosed pliers, and trim. Then tuck that loop into the nest. At this point you can manipulate the nest how you like it. Push the sides up, or push the sides in to cup the eggs better. Wire is very forgiving!

Then add a jump ring to the nest. I chose to have the nest hang from the area that I “sewed.” That is where I added the jump ring.DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-11Then attach the nest to your necklace chain.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-2I added a cute silver bird charm to the necklace chain also. I found the bird charm on eBay.

I finished my bird necklace by adding a lobster clasp to the ends of the chain with a jump ring, and an additional jump ring on the opposite side of the chain.

DIY-bird-necklace-Crafts-Unleashed-13That’s it! Your bird necklace is ready to wear.

I think it would be fun to add colored pearls to the necklace too!

You could also switch out the color of the wire! So many options, and so, so easy- anybirdie can make these. (<–see what I did there?)

Happy crafting!
