Pottery Barn Inspired Butterfly Mobile Craft

I spotted this Pottery Barn Chandelier online months ago.  It’s simply adorable, but expensive and out of stock.  Luckily it didn’t look too difficult to make so I decided to try my hand at a similar butterfly mobile craft.

Supplies needed to make your own Pottery Barn inspired butterfly mobile:

Take wax paper and punch out the butterfly shapes.  I found it faster to fold the wax paper in fourths to punch out 4 at a time.

Cut 8 – 24 inch strands of bakers twine and 8- 12 inch.  Using a needlepoint needle, thread the bakers twine and tie a knot at the end of one strand.

Taking two wax paper butterflies, thread the bakers twine through the bottom middle then the top middle section.  Each butterfly uses two sheets of wax paper to give it more depth and the appearance of flapping wings.  Thread 4 to 6 butterflies on each strand of bakers twine (I like to make the number random to give it a more whimsical look).

Double knot all 8 of the 24 inch strands onto the 12 inch gold loop, each being equally spaced, an 8th of a circle apart.  Leave 8 inches of twine to spare on the top.

Take the smaller gold ring and place in the center.

Using the same strands that were just tied on, single knot the 8 inch ring.  This is important to single knot and make sure the ring is centered.  Mobile crafts will hang lopsided if the ring is not centered.  Single knotting will help you be able to adjust the ring if it is not centered.

Tie the other 8 – 12 inch strands onto the inner gold ring.  Snip away excess twine.  Gather the original 24 inch strands into the center and check for evenness.  If the mobile is lopsided, adjust the strands.  This is probably the most time consuming part.  It took me about 20 minutes to adjust every strand perfectly.  Once everything is adjusted, tie the twine into a knot and hang.

Enjoy your Pottery Barn inspired butterfly mobile craft!

I absolutely love this! I have 4 boys, so it wouldn’t be something that they would enjoy, but I am going to attempt to make it for my niece. It looks simple and It is just too pretty to not try! Thank you for sharing! Giving credit where it is due, I saw this on Knock Off Decor. Thank you again!!

I’m a complete novice at crafts, but I really want to make this. Where do you get the butterfly punch that you used for this, and also, this is probably obvious to others, but where do you get gold rings? I’ve never seen them anywhere.

Thanks for this great tutorial :)

  4. This is awesome! I can’t believe the punch cut the wax paper so well. I would want make this and matching garlands!
