Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins

Fall reminds me of warmth- scarves, sweaters, afghans- and what do all of those things have in common?

Yarn.

That is what I love about fall crafts. These cute pom pom pumpkins bring some texture and “warmth” into my home decor.

Fall-crafts-pom-pom-pumpkins-Crafts-Unleashed-2It was incredibly easy to make these pumpkins, and it is a project that could easily be done by children.

Supplies needed to make your own fall crafts pom pom pumpkins:

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 1Let’s get started!

I chose to use a cardstock card as my base to wind the yarn around. This is a standard A2 card size.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 2You can choose whatever you like to wind your yarn- even your own hand will work great!

Begin winding your yarn.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 3Keep winding!

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 4I chose to wind around my card base about 100 times. Just keep going until you have a nice, thick pile.

Trim the end of the yarn from the skein.

Then cut off a section of yarn, about 12″ long.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 5Carefully slide your yarn off of the card.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 6Using your 12″ section, tie the yarn around the middle.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 7Tie the yarn tight, but take care not to break the yarn. Tie a knot.

Then, using scissors, begin cutting the yarn loops.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 8Continue to cut all the loops, until you have a finished pom pom!

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 9Your pom pom will most likely be uneven in areas. Just give it a little haircut to even it out.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 10Keep in mind, you are making a pumpkin- so it does not need to be perfect.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 11Then, look for a nice spot to add your stem.

Trim a cinnamon stick to your desired length.

I tried trimming the cinnamon stick with pliers- I had better luck just snapping it with my hands.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 12Apply a generous amount of hot glue to the tip of the cinnamon stick.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 13Press and hold the cinnamon stick in place until the hot glue dries.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 14Tie the top of the cinnamon stick stem with green felt ric rac.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 15Cut apart flowers from the felt flower trim, and add a button to the center.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 16Hot glue the flower to the center of the tied green felt trim.

Fall Crafts: DIY Pom Pom Pumpkins 17The last little finishing touch I added to these adorable fall crafts was a mini kraft tag that says “Happy Fall.”

You could personalize your pom pom pumpkin any way you like!

Experiment with different weights and colors of yarn!

Fall-crafts-pom-pom-pumpkins-Crafts-UnleashedA whimsical (and warm!) welcome to Fall.

  2. Love this project, so cute and very easy, colorful. Love projects like this, glad you shared this. I have some goldish orange yarn, bought a huge spool of it from our local thrift store for $2. Figured it was worth the price, can use for many projects. Think I’ll have to try this pumpkin.
Where did you get the cute felt rick rack trim? Would love to have some of that. Happy week
