This winter has been particularly chilly(bitter!) in my neck of the woods, and we still have quite a bit of winter left this season.
I have learned that being out in the cold is tolerable–if you prepare.
Enter, these cute little hand warmers:
Today, I am going to show you how to make hand warmers – so easy and cheap!
You only need:
- Darice Felties Bases Value Pack
- Rice
- Small Bowl and Spoon (for convenience in filling the warmers)
- Sewing Machine
The felt hearts come 16 to a package, matched up perfectly. Enough for 8 hand warmers. (Awesome gift idea!) Don’t you just love the leopard pattern?
Choose your felt hearts, they are a thick material, and pre-cut.
Sandwich the two hearts together, then using a sewing machine, stitch around the perimeter of the hearts. I suppose you could hand-sew too. They would be cute with a decorative blanket stitch! I am just far too lazy.
Leave an opening to add the rice. I found it easiest to sew them shut after filling if I left the opening on a straight side of the heart.
When the edges are stitched, fill a small bowl with rice, and spoon the rice into the heart.
Do not overfill. It will be too hard to stitch the opening closed.
Return the heart to the sewing machine, and stitch the opening closed.
Now the hearts are ready to go to work, keeping someone you love warm.
Place the heart in the microwave for 45 seconds, and slip it into a pocket.
Makes winter a little warmer, and definitely a whole lot cuter.
